Crayons For Jesus

Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known. (Jeremiah 33:3)

Beginning a new life with Christ is so very exciting and rewarding but at the same time, it can be extremely overwhelming. It’s important to remember that a new life in Christ isn’t about religion; it’s about having a personal relationship with Christ. There are a few steps you can take to better understand and develop a true relationship with Christ. Here are some ways to get started.

Spend time in prayer.
Because of Christ’s sacrifice we have the freedom to go before God in prayer each day. Prayer is defined as an address or a petition to God. It is nothing more than taking time each day to talk to God. It is important to remember that prayer is a two-sided conversation. Take the time to listen too.

Jesus instructs us in Matthew 6:6 that “when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret.”

Jesus gives a model of how to pray in Matthew 6:5-15 . It teaches us how to use prayer to praise God and how to use prayer to present God with our requests.

God will instruct you were to go and what to do if you take the time to ask Him and then to listen. Psalm 32:8

Spend time in the Word.
How are we to know who Christ is and what he wants for us unless we read the words He has to say to us?

2 Timothy 3:16-17 tells us that all scripture is God’s breath and that it has come from His mouth.

Joshua 1:8 instructs us to read God’s word and meditate on them.  It’s also important to memorize scripture to help us remember what we learn and to apply it to our lives.

Jesus uses the parable of the wise and foolish builders found in Matthew 7:24-27 to instruct us to follow His words.

If you follow Christ’s word then you will truly be His disciple. (John 8:31 )

There are several online sources that can provide you with helpful study tools including Bible reading plans.

  Spend time with a mentor.
It’s important to find someone who is already grounded in the faith to mentor you. Everyone needs someone to hold them accountable and to help them sort through their questions about God.  They can also be supportive in prayer with you.

A good mentor can show you the meanings of certain verses and can show you how they apply. You can find mentors at a local area church or it can be a friend or family member who you know to be a mature Christian.

What better way to learn how to be a disciple of Christ than to be taught by someone who is already a disciple of Christ?

Spend time with other Christians.
As soon as you become a Christian you are not alone and you will never be alone again. You are now part of an eternal family that is the body of Christ.

Proverbs 27:17 tells us that “as iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.” As the body of Christ we are to teach, encourage, love, support, and direct one another.

One way to have fellowship with other believers is to join a small group or a bible study.

And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another… Hebrews 10:24-25

Spend time in church.
Church is more than a building. It is a place where you can find fellowship with other believers, instruction concerning the Bible, and a safe place where you can worship God. It is a place of refuge and only a preview of what it will be like in heaven.

Christ is the head of the church. Colossians 1:18

The body of Christ is made up of many members. All believers are members of the body/family of Christ.1 Corinthians 12:14 .

Church is a place we can find refuge and rejuvenation among our fellow believers in Christ. Psalm 63:2 .

These are only a few of several things that you can do to become an active member of God’s family. Do not be discouraged and remember that God rewards those who seek Him. It may be challenging and confusing at times but be patient and put forth the effort because it is not in vain. Being accepted as one of God’s children is a life-changing and eternal lasting event. Take the time to seek who God is and allow Him to show you who you are in Him and the plan He has for your life. Don’t lose heart!
