Crayons For Jesus

The watchmen found me as they went about in the city; they beat me, they bruised me, they took away my veil, those watchmen of the walls. Song of Solomon 5:7

The book Song of Solomon is a model of love. It has often been compared to the relationship Christ has with His church. It is to demonstrate to us how Christ is completely captured by us, despite our imperfections. It is also to show us that having a relationship with Him is something to be most desired.

In this verse, we see another aspect to a relationship with Christ. That is, the things which come to destroy and prevent that relationship from flourishing. The bride here has been enamored by her beloved and goes out to seek Him. On her way out though, watchmen lurk and try to destroy this love. This is just what the enemy and his henchmen set out to do.

The moment he sees us pursuing our beloved and the goodness of our beloved Christ, he sends his watchmen to find us. And they always seem to find us when we are most desperate and long so much for the things which only our beloved can provide.

Just like the bride in this verse, they come and beat us down. They not only pack a punch for the moment but the damage they cause forms a deep bruise. It lasts for a long time and can be staggering. The watchmen use situations in our lives to deliver these blows.

Not only are they focused on inflicting damage by using circumstances to get us down but they take away that which is already ours in an effort to make us feel useless and hopeless. They take away our veil and joy of salvation. They take away the victory we have over them.

What is a bride without her veil? What is a Christian without the knowledge of the love of Christ? While the watchmen can use situations to distract us from and are attempting to take away the veil of grace, they are doing this only to stop us from pursuing our beloved. While they have no power to do truly do that, they can deceive us and bruise us until we stop searching for our beloved.

Do not give in to these watchmen of the walls. They are trying to make sure you do not find your beloved, that you are never free. They want to keep you down and to squash the life out of you. The bride continues searching and finds her beloved. Their love flourishes and is as beautiful as a garden. Continue searching. Search for your beloved so that when the watchmen come looking to take away all of your joy and hope they cannot.  You will find all that you need by searching for the ONLY beloved that you will ever need.

Beloved Savior,
This world is dark and there are watchmen everywhere put here by the enemy to take away all that you have given us. They don’t have this power so we pray that you will protect us from the lies and deceptions they use to cheat us. We pray that you protect us from and heal the bruises that they deliver. Jesus, open our eyes to the passionate love you have for us and instill in our hearts a deep hunger for you. Help us to be like this bride and to pursue you in the darkest hour of night. We trust that we will find you and thank you for all you have done. Teach us about your love so that we may be as radiant as a bride and that we might show others the power of a perfect love like yours. None can compare Lord. In Your name, Amen.
