Instead, they were
longing for a better country - a heavenly one. Therefore God is not
ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.
Hebrews 11:16
Admit it - there have been days when it feels like
nothing you have done is right. Sometimes our hearts grow restless and
sorrowful when we feel trapped in situations that aren't pleasant. We
are saints who are living in an imperfect and dying world. When faced
with the disaster, disappointment, dejection, and depression that this
world can have we might often long that it would all pass away. You may
have been convinced that this was ungratefulness but when times like
these arise it is important to remember that as people no longer of
this world it is normal for you to not feel like you have a true home
here. We have been ordained by God and sanctified by Christ as saints
meant for heaven. When the world has cast you away you can take heart
and know that the Lord is preparing a heavenly place for you and you
will be united with him.
The they this verse is talking about
are the wonderful people of God listed at the begining of chapter 11.
They mention how by faith Abel, Enoch, Abraham, Noah, Issac, Jacob,
Joseph, Moses, etc. etc. lived in this world knowing that there was a
place beyond this world. The key phrase that is emphasized in all of
these verses is by faith. We know that faith is believing without
seeing and it is by faith that we know God is preparing a city for us.
God is not ashamed of us when we look at this broken world and long for
the home we have faith he is making for us. The fact that our hearts
are eternally minded should quiet our guilt for we must always be
mindful that we will receive our due reward and go to live with our
father.
We will go to heaven and be with him, our desire
should always be that. While it is important to be thankful for the
blessings and divine working of God present in this world we must not
become too wrapped up in this world lest we forget the great things
that we can't even imagine that lay in wait for us once this world has
passed away. All of the people detailed in Hebrews chapter 11
experienced great hardship and trials where they faced death, were
ridiculed, faced enemies, and were rejected by this world but by faith
they walked through it. Because of their faith they were able to rely
completely on God. Because they were eternally mindful and saw the
world as broken as it is, they longed for heaven and walked in faith.
Take
heart that this world and its problems shall fade away and our new and
true home - the home God has always designed for us is waiting. At the
proper time, we will be reunited physically with our father because
Jesus' blood allows the sin of this world to fade away and his power
will make the world pass away. He will establish his new kingdom where
we will be one with him for eternity! Be heavenly minded for the things
of this world are imperfect, long for the perfection of Christ and use
his strength to walk by faith. Each step in faith is a step closer to
the home we have been destined and called to arrive at when the
appointed time comes.
Dear Father,
Remind us when we have
been cast aside that your arms are open for us. Take us into your
heavenly arms, heal our hurts, and Jesus, remind us that you are
preparing a home for us. Father stir up the excitement and help us to
stand in awe at you as we try to imagine what it will be like to stand
before you. To touch your face father should be our deepest desire. As
tenants in this broken land continue to provide us with your love so
that we hunger for heaven and walk in faith so that we can see your
beautiful face. Amen.
